Did you know… Plant preparation is distillation’s refining moment

by Lynn Kwitt on April 24, 2010

What does that mean? The integrity that goes into how a plant is raised, harvested, stored, and aged are all variables that give the plant it’s vibrant frequency. Even the dew on the leaves, the percentage of the plant in bloom and weather conditions two weeks prior to harvest should be taken into consideration.

The variables for steam distillation include attention to the plant itself, the temperature, pressure and how long it is distilled. If any of these factors are off it destroys the vital chemistry of the plant.

For instance, Cypress oil requires a minimum of 24 hours of distillation at265 degrees F. and 5 pounds of pressure to produce the right combination of chemical constituents. If  distillation is cut by 2 hours 18-20 constituents will be missing.

Most commercial Cypress oil is distilled for only 2 hours and 15 minutes to cut costs and  produce a cheaper oil. Sadly it does not provide any therapeutic benefits.

Essential oils that  are distilled for the perfume industry don’t need the delicate balance needed for the oil’s healing properties. Manufacturers are only interested in the smell so they refine the oil by burning off  the chemicals or they add solvents to make the smell last longer or go further for sales purposes.Even essential oil distributors  in the United States and throughout the world look for ways to sell oils cheaply by adding chemicals. That’s why the rule of thumb is never ingest an oil. Another trick of the trade is through redistillation. This refers to the repeated distillation of the same plant material to maximize the volume. This may be done two, three or four times producing a weaker and less potent oil, breaking down the chemical constituents through oxidization or hydrolization.

Young Living has a state of the art stainless steel  cooking chamber to reduce the possibility of chemically altering the essential oil. Modeled after ancient Egyptian distillation, Young Living uses  vertical steam distillation. The plant is distilled in small batches using low pressure and low heat.

Young Living’s attention to detail and the gas chromatography used to test the delicate chemistry of the finished product is unsurpassed in the industry. Why choose any other company?!
